I don't know why, but it struck me funny to be hearing the story of the Annunciation so late in the Advent season. Still, the message it imparts: for all of us to take up the challenge as Mary did to "bring Christ into the world" is really an important one on the eve of the big day. Okay, we weren't immaculately conceived and God isn't asking us to bear a child or anything nearly so immense as that, but what God does ask of us is just as important. Christ is present with us through one another and this Christmas so many people who don't have Christ in their lives in any shape or form need to see the manifest love of God in the world today. And we can be that for them.

I was going to go to Saint Agnes today, but missed the 8:30 mass in the morning (scraping out the car is always more work than I lease room for ~ gotta get on top of that). The next mass was at 10 and in Latin and for some reason I just didn't feel like going to the Latin mass this morning (who knows). So instead, I went to Our Lady of Guadalupe down the street ~ a very modern, very community-oriented church. The service was nice enough and the music was beautiful and the priest was a good speaker (though started off on what I thought was a pretty bad joke and then rambled off topic into some political I-don't-know-what). But it's definitely not the place for me. I try not to be a snob about these things and I'm willing to bet most of the people there are far better Christians and far more devoted than I, but I really have a hard time attending a church where the minimum amount of reverence for the Eucharist in the tabernacle is not displayed.

I still have a few more parishes I can visit. I am thinking of making an effort to go to weekday mass at Saint Agnes perhaps. Although it's pink, I think I can deal with that far better than I can deal with people chatting it up around the altar like they're at Wyatts with their cafeteria trays trying to pick between the carrot slaw and the green jello.

There's also a Saint Mary's here fairly close by. I might try that one as well ~ it's an older church off to the side. Maybe after being at the cathedral for all these years, a less-well-known church would be the ticket (Saint Agnes is pretty famous, I guess, for Father Altier being there).

Anyway, I'm rambling on here about nothing in particular. I didn't think parish-shopping was going to be this difficult. But hopefully I'll find a home soon.

I can understand how you feel. We have been going to St. Elizabeth, which is about a mile down the road. This was fine. We have Ave Maria University starting up here in Naples and they have Mass in a chapel on the temporary grounds of the University. I had a conversation with one of the nuns that live there, and she put the thought in my head of going to Ave Maria for Mass. On the one hand I didn't want to go because when the actual Cathedral is built it will be more than a few miles away from me. However...it seems that we may have the opportunity to move to Ave Maria Town once it is built. So - I went to Ave Maria for Mass one week.

I was just blown away. This was Church as it was meant to be, and it was only in a chapel!!! Last week I went to the 10am Mass and didn't realize it was going to be in Latin until I got there! I came home and told DH that I had hit the jackpot - Incense, Concelebrated Mass, Latin Mass, Father Fessio giving the homily - Oh Boy - I got the whole 9 yards!!

Now I am almost afraid to go there. If I don't get to move out that way I am going to be extreeeeemely disappointed! This week I went to St. Elizabeth so I could find out what the schedule was for Christmas Masses and boy the differences were incredible!

I guess I need to be thankful that I have the opportunity to be able to attend such a wonderful Church, even if I do have to give it up after a time.

Anyway *blush* didnt' mean to carry on so!

well how far is "more than a few miles"? ~ there were two parishes closer to my house in texas, but i still chose St. Mary's. here in minnesota everyone seems to think anything farther than a mile or two away is "reeeeeeal far". Saint Agnes here seems strangely far to me, but it's only 3.7 miles away (closer than St. Mary's was, actually).

and when it comes down to it, perhaps a few extra miles is really more than worth it when you can celebrate mass in a way that is reverent and comfortable for you. and then if you do move there ~ so much the better!

well how far is "more than a few miles"?

Currently the Chapel is about 5 miles or so. That is no big deal. The new site will be about 25 to 30 miles from our current house. Tom doesn't think we should travel that far to get to Church when there is one right down the street. I think we will be better off living closer to the Church myself. If it were up to us that wouldn't be a problem. We are in the middle of looking at the feasability of having a family "compound" where Tom, me, and Tom's sister Cathie would all be living in the same place. This is a looong story. We all need to agree where we want to build a house at. Ave Maria is one of the places we are looking into. However, we may not even stay in Florida so I guess we are playing it by ear anyway.

The new Church probably won't be ready until mid-2007 at the soonest anyway, so I have lots of time to get Tom used to the idea of going there instead of down the street. And depending on where we move, Ave Maria may be the closest thing around anyway!

I went to St. Agnes High School for my first couple years of h.s....it's a great parish! I didn't realize that Fr. Altier was so well-known, though. I'm glad that he is, though--he's a great priest!
