[livejournal.com profile] sb77 shared with me the Gettysburg side of Iced Earth's Glorious Burden release and i've been listening to it today.

the second track, "Hold at all Costs", which tells the armistead/hancock story is especially good, i think. there's also some great stuff in the final cut ("High Water Mark") like the opening exchange between longstreet and lee, but i wish it had concluded with a bigger bang (no pun intended). lee's lament "it's all my fault" is really a heart breaker line, but the song then seems to sort of peter out (maybe i was hoping for more of a "broadway" finale).

though stephan and i disagree as to the quality of the lead singer's voice (former judas priest frontman tim owens, who i think is great but could have a bit more depth), the concept is great and the music is very cool (those of you who enjoy the fantasy-epic qualities of iron maiden and dio, for example, might really groove on this. so check it out, i say!

The last time we were together
I grabbed his hand and I pledged
If I ever draw my sword on you
May the good Lord strike me dead

Ah, love Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica (at least their earlier stuff). Cut my teeth on Black Sabbath - Metal Rules!

whoohoo ~ !

i was a maiden/dio/cooper fan ~ not so crazy about judas priest, but really also dug queensryche and the guitar gods. if it was epic, i was there.
