[livejournal.com profile] sb77 shared with me the Gettysburg side of Iced Earth's Glorious Burden release and i've been listening to it today.

the second track, "Hold at all Costs", which tells the armistead/hancock story is especially good, i think. there's also some great stuff in the final cut ("High Water Mark") like the opening exchange between longstreet and lee, but i wish it had concluded with a bigger bang (no pun intended). lee's lament "it's all my fault" is really a heart breaker line, but the song then seems to sort of peter out (maybe i was hoping for more of a "broadway" finale).

though stephan and i disagree as to the quality of the lead singer's voice (former judas priest frontman tim owens, who i think is great but could have a bit more depth), the concept is great and the music is very cool (those of you who enjoy the fantasy-epic qualities of iron maiden and dio, for example, might really groove on this. so check it out, i say!

The last time we were together
I grabbed his hand and I pledged
If I ever draw my sword on you
May the good Lord strike me dead

My son has one of their cd's and I think this is the one. He really loves it, but has taken it with him to Ft. Hood. He's currently training in CA so I can't even ask him, but if this is the one I'm going to see if he'll loan it to me. I guess I should have listened to it when he was here (or when he was in boot camp and all his cd's were here LOL!)

Heavy metal about the civil war sounds pretty cool :)

hahahaha ~ isn't that always the case: something is laying around and you think nothing of it, then the minute you want it, it's gone away or someone threw it out or the car decided to eat it.

the reviews of the "side a" material (disc one? man i'm dating myself here), are sorta feh (it's other history battle anthems: waterloo, american revolution, etc.), but fans say it's worth it for the gettysburg stuff alone.

Well my son listens to some things that are really out there (at least according to my tastes, which are really diverse!) so I tend to not jump every time he suggests something! As I respect your opinion, now I think I will give it a whirl!

well, like i said, if you enjoy the sort of epic style of maiden, this will appeal. the lyrics are very corny (of course), but it's heavy metal, after all!

so it's not great "art" by any stretch ~ just pure emotive sentimentality. just like the good ol' days ~

hahahahahaha ~ the artwork on the set is really very compelling, isn't it? even before i listened, i was salivating.

Ah, love Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica (at least their earlier stuff). Cut my teeth on Black Sabbath - Metal Rules!

whoohoo ~ !

i was a maiden/dio/cooper fan ~ not so crazy about judas priest, but really also dug queensryche and the guitar gods. if it was epic, i was there.

Oooh Queensryche! I loved their stuff! Cooper LOL! I love his stuff! Thanks for the great memories! Music these days can't compare I don't think!

yeah, sometimes i just have to throw their stuff on for old time's sake. i still love it, but i can't listen for long ~ i must be getting old ~ hahahahahaha!

Iced Earth is amazing. If you like their sound, I would also check out Evergrey. They can't match Iced Earth for the Civil War lyrics (they've also done some other epics in other themes, by the way), but they've got the same musical style. And if you're looking for more. . .eclectic stuff, shall we say, probably similar to what [livejournal.com profile] bluesafyre's son listens to, hit me up for suggestions. I'm a prog rock fanatic, and I've got long lists of suggestions.

cool ~ !

i've really been awol from music for about 15 years, so new stuff is definitely welcome ~ i'll check out evergrey for starters!

thank you!

Evergrey isn't one of my favorites, but my roommate loves them!

Myself, I'm more of a Dream Theater, Symphony X, Joe Satriani, Andromeda, and Sun Caged sort of guy (OK, I could go on for hours listing bands). Hardly anything mainstream (and not even American half the time), but I say people who don't know of them are just missing out. But that's why I was caught so off guard from seeing an Iced Earth reference on LJ, especially from someone who, while I don't know you very well, I would not have envisioned ever coming across an album of theirs. Best wishes to you, musically speaking!

oooo satriani ~ i used to be a big-time satriani freak. oddly though, i have none of his albums (used to listen to my brother's).

hahahaha ~ isn't it fun to have your expectations upended?

You need to update your Satch collection! Mainly by. . .starting it! Perhaps we have more in common musically than I would have ever guessed. . .which makes it that much more fun. I live for cognitive dissonance.
