i don't have a lot of positive things to say about fanfiction. i've seen it at its best and at its worst. i think it can be fun, but also strikes me as an exercise in self-amusement that ultimately is energy that could be spent writing and developing original fiction instead.
but if i ever did hanker to write a fanfict, my fandoms would be obscure and bizarre to say the least.
top three choices for fandoms:
1. Ravenous ~ this is one of my favorite movies of all time (and that says a lot about me). it's a historical period piece, involves a remote army camp in the snowy northern californian mountain region, it has elements of the supernatural and themes of faith, redemption, and what it means to be human. if this didn't have my name written all over it at inception, i don't know what does. and come on: think of the premise! a skeleton crew of army rejects possessed by a cannibalistic wendigo have to maintain propriety while slaking their unnatural hunger. it's way better than vampires!

and check this out: an rpg based on it <~ apparently i'm not the only freak! hahahahaha ~!
2. Dead Man ~ william blake and nobody wander the west coast introducing people to blake's "poetry" ~ so deliciously twisted.
3. Black Robe ~ because...hmmmm...wait a minute: mix Black Robe and Ravenous and i think i did already write this one ~ hahahaha
wow ~ i've totally amused myself.
in a related vein (though fed by a different ventricle perhaps), i always wanted to do an adaptation of the Jesuit Relations as a tv show. later on i discovered Nicholas Point (sj), and wanted to adapt his memoir into a tv show. the only problem is i would wind up fictionalizing so much of it ~ both because of omissions in the narratives of both works and because it would need to be more than just a record of accounts. and if i heavily fictionalize it, i think i would do it a disservice. so those are projects i will prolly always wish i had the temperament for, but likely don't.

outstanding performances from robert carlysle guy pierce, and jeffery jones
and a great score by damon albarn and michael nyman

it's pretty to look at.
that's about the only positive thing i can say about it. but then i think it's a poor story to begin with ~ and not helped by some bad casting and lame stereotypes.
it scored a 10 out of 10 worst civil war film cliches in my book ~ which is pretty horrific. hahaha ~
