i liked this clock better before i painted it ~ and this is why i have problems with color. i really wanted to just do it up in a sepia-like thing, but then got carried away and next thing you know, it's all sorts of colors happening.

not to mention everything's a fill when i thought i was just going to add a little texture and shading (it gets away from you really quick!). this woulda never happened in "real" media because i'd've just had my one sepia tone and my water and my brush and i wouldn't have gone all psychedelic on it (with just a hint of gold).

ah well, i'll keep plugging away and see if i can find a happy medium.

edit ~ ja, see ~ the one on the right i tried to tint straight and it still degenerated into a full-color thing. still using sort of antiquey tones, but it's not what i was going for at all ~ clearly i just have no idea how to handle the backgrounds because i tend to fill them ~ i don't hate all this, it's just a lot more work and i don't know how "period" it looks. eh ~ we'll see.

edit edit for my amusement (1/2/06): i added the previous two panels. the problem with business cards is that the quality of the image degenerates when the figures get too small (like in panel no. 2) ~ while i'm used to drawing small, i'm not good enough to draw that small! and the overall effect suffers. that, and the coloring just ain't working out. it's making me buggy.

in other news i bought regular cane sugar (instead of the perruche i had been using) ~ maybe i'll have a nip o' the absinthe this eve and see if it louches any different with the processed stuff as opposed to that other ilk. i meant to have some last night to celebrate the new year, but what the hey, it's still new years, right?

which reminds me, i've gotta get a cork thingy stopper for that bottle ~ my cork's near done-in!

Re: My Name Is Old Contemptible, and I'm a sepiaholic

that's really what i'm going for (it was a red dress in Schindler's List ~ i want the eyes, the reds, and possibly some blues/greens and golds to be spot colored here and there (very little though, and only for "important things" (like the green chair is significant here).

i know exactly what it looks like in my head ~ now to make it work on paper ~ ha!
