i guess i picked hard films ~ !

1. The Diary of a Country Priest (nope, not italian ~ french ~ bresson)
2. "that weird western" Deadman ~ excellent jarmusch, at his best with a superb all-star cast.
3. Immortal Beloved (that's johanna in the courtroom) ~ no one got this one!
4. Glory ~ easy peasy even if it is an odd scene. kudos to [livejournal.com profile] lastremnant
5. The Mission ~ with some probing [livejournal.com profile] akirad got this one! yay!
6. Gangs of New York ~ it's mr. tammany hall. okay, a hard image from an otherwise obvious film (i couldn't just show bill the butcher!)
7. El Dorado ~ the only john wayne movie i'll watch more than once. don't get me started!
8. Master & Commander ~ [livejournal.com profile] akirad got this one the first try!
9. The Thin Red Line ~ [livejournal.com profile] oldcontemptible got this one ~ i'm impressed! thought it would be seriously tough. love this movie like nobody's business.
10. Andrei Rublev! ~ do i not rant enough about this film? best foreign movie ever made. period.
11. Jesus of Nazareth ~ couple of close guesses, but [livejournal.com profile] oldcontemptible nailed it. zeferelli's seminal tv movie on the life of Christ will never be topped. (and that's james farentino as simon peter).
12. Rumblefish ~ didn't expect anyone to get this one: coppolla's early art masterpiece. a gem!

thanks to everyone who played!

6. Gangs of New York

I should've known that.

11. Jesus of Nazareth

That's the Jesus movie I grew up with. Just as I picture Moses as Chuck Heston; I picture Jesus as Robert Powell.

I have no commentary on Rumblefish. That was just part of a paste I should have cut.

i grew up with it too and Robert Powell will always be my image of Jesus as well ~

While we are on the topic of movies, might I recommend a film you perhaps will enjoy. We seem to have similar taste in films.

To End All Wars (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0243609/) depicts the will, tenacity, and faith of WWII POWs on the Phillipine Islands after surrending to the Japanese. Based on true accounts. I highly recommend it as it's not your typical WWII movie and a much more powerful film than the 2005 film The Great Raid (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0326905/), having a similar theme and backstory.

thank you!

"The Diary of a Country Priest" - of course french. It looks too damp to be italy!

"Andrei Rublev" of course. Tarkovsky. I loved "Solaris" - nice try George Clooney, but no cigar!

Good fun.
