Winning isn't everything, but losing is no picnic. Amy's personal victory backfires on her, the people of Faigerston won't take losing without a fight, to James's chagrin Emmaline has serious second thoughts about forcing the issue, and if Lewis isn't already crazy, he will be certifiable before long.

Excerpt:

"He's Southern trash," Mary laughed.

"He's not trash!" Amy held out her hand for the picture.

"Southern people are trash and they're poor. You can tell by his picture he's both. Won't you two make a fine couple?"

"There's no shame in being poor," Amy said, feeling her face flush.

Mary took a step up as if to hand the picture back, but instead lurched forward and snatched the letter out of Amy's hands. "Well let's just see," she said.

"Mary, you give that back!" Amy rose angrily.

Mary fanned open the letter. She started to read and then started to laugh. "Well he can't even write." She jerked away when Amy tried to grab the letter out of her hand. "Can hardly spell! And my, my, my what a romantic sentiment: yours respectfully."

"It's called proper manners, of which you have none! Now give it here!" Amy grabbed Mary's arms and wrestled for the letter. The picture dropped to the ground in the fight and the letter tore in two as they struggled. Amy threw Mary down and grabbed her by the hair. She shook her violently. One of the other girls ran screaming into the school.
