i was looking for an image from the film Glory for tomorrow's review and i found this curious picture.

never mind the weird sheen on the image ~ it was scanned under plastic. there are a number of interesting things about this.
1.) it's a promo picture and it's labeled as Glory ~ it's one of those images they send to newspapers, etc., to promote the movie before its release
2.) it's a scene that never happens in the film.
3.) matthew broderick's facial hair is all wrong: the moustache is the wrong style and he's missing his goatee.
4.) even the special edition dvd does not contain this scene, though it does include all of the "cut" footage as an extra.
so what the heck is it? the woman standing behind Matthew Broderick is Jane Alexander who, like many others in the film, is uncredited since she donated her time and paycheck to making the movie. she plays Robert Gould Shaw's mother and only has a few lines.
my guess is that the scene does happen, but for some reason was reshot with Broderick in uniform (and the correct facial hair) instead of in civilian clothes. this appears to be the same scene as the party in which Governor Andrew asks Shaw to accept the commission as colonel of the 54th Massachussets. The angle and framing (with his mother standing behind him is almost exactly the same). The differences are that in the final version, he's wearing his Captain's uniform instead of a suit, has the right moustache and goatee, and he's not holding a book (which is also bizarre). Because this was a promo shot, it might have been totally staged before actual shooting began (and this is why everything is "off").
that's my best guess and what makes sense to me. it's either that or a lost scene entirely that wasn't included on the special edition cuts section (if so, i'm mad! hahahahahaha).
i also found an interesting promo shot that i've never seen anywhere else before of the actors in character, seemingly posed as in the famous "charging fort wagner" image. can't say for certain that's what they're doing, but what they are doing never happens in the film. i didn't include that picture here because it was teensy and i couldn't find one with decent resolution. i'll keep looking. meanwhile, here's the original print that it seems to be emulating.

anyway, more on the actual film tomorrow, i guess. i just felt i had to share this silly little mystery.

It's strange...if you watch "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", then "Glory", it's like, your mind spazzes. You think...it's awesome that he can pull off a serious role...it's like...wow. And...cool. XB;
