Excerpt:
"Mrs. Woodword, really, I am trying to help."
"Help she says!" the woman threw up her arms. She went into the house. Emmaline looked to Sandy helplessly. Sandy shook his head. In a moment, Mrs. Woodward came back out of the house and thrust a picture into Emmaline's hand. "That's my son, Edward Junior. He's dead now near two years. He got himself killed coming home from the war when the war was all over last summer. Do you have any children Mrs. Hunter?"
"No, I don't," Emmaline said, holding the picture with both hands as if it were the precious child itself.
"Of course you don't. That tiny figure of yours, coddled as you are. You've never known a day's labor."
"Now hold on there, Ma'am," Sandy started to interrupt.
"And what's your story?" she snapped at him. "Haven't you heard the news? They freed your people. Go on back to Africa."
"Oh please," Emmaline intervened. "Sandy, don't fuss. She has good cause to be angry. I am very sorry about your son, Mrs. Woodward."
