kinda hard act to follow, The Dark Knight. nevertheless, i wandered out for my third friday in a row to go see the new X-Files movie (subtitled "I want to believe".

the good:
  • scully and mulder are still together after all these years. their relationship ain't perfect, but they've stuck it out. points for not making a soap opera out of that. it's actually nice to see them as "people who go home at the end of the day" for once. i kinda wish they bothered to get married, but at least they're together (even Indy finally tied the knot!).

  • snow! lots of it. can't go wrong with snow.

  • mitch pileggi. okay, he only has about three lines, but still ~ it just wouldn't have been X-files without him.

the bad:
  • how many years and this is what chris carter came up with? the plot is very weak and take no chances. it's full of big ideas, but carter takes it absolutely nowhere. i'm not even sure it's cohesive.

  • it's not really an x-file when the case is this straight-up. maybe or maybe not a little psychic phenomena, but otherwise, i would have really liked to have had something a little spookier going on here.

  • an underwhelming supporting cast and an underused mitch pileggi.

the ugly:
  • correct me if i am wrong, but wasn't the world ending when the series went off the air all those years ago? yeah. they don't really address that here. bad move.

duchovny and anderson look really good. i enjoyed spending time with mulder and scully (seemed like almost too little time ~ made me homesick for the show). i'm not sure the movie is any good (it's definitely not "great"). but i think if you're a fan, you ought to see it. you'll enjoy it just for a (perhaps final) romp with old friends. just for kicks.

Just saw it today and I have to agree with some of your points. I won't go so far as to say it was... disappointing... it just could have been made a bit better. I think there were a ton of loose ends just flappin' in the breeze. I think Chris Carter was doing his best to appeal to a wider audience, but I think he sort of missed the mark with the actual X-Files crowd. I dunno... was it an X-File? Maybe. I guess the way they wrapped it up with the connections between the criminals and Father Joe, it's up to your particular point of view in determining whether it was an X-File or not... believers will undoubtedly believe that Father Joe was having the visions while skeptics will believe the opposite. I enjoyed it though.

And Miss Scully looked so darn good. *swooooooooooooooon*

And is it me or do you have a Skinner hang-up or something? ;-)

skinner was hot! hahahahahahaha ~

i wasn't disappointed either. i guess it really just didn't seem any bigger or better than an extra long episode of the show. which isn't a bad thing. i was just hoping for something with a wee more depth. i feel like they could have gotten so much more out of the story, but didn't really explore the whole "bad isn't always evil and good isn't necessarily what's best" theme. it had everything it needed ~ just didn't feel like it coalesced.

glad you went to see it! i hope it does decently at the box office, at least.
