When you have the intuition that there is something which is there,
but out of the reach of your physical world,
art and religion are the only means to get to it.~ Guillermo del Toro
came across the above quote while browsing this morning. it's been my meditation for the day. goes well with how i spent my afternoon, which was hauling my cookies uptown to see:

spoiler free comments: this is quite the film. critics may say it's brilliant, overwrought or over-hyped and i can see some theatre-goers either spellbound by daniel day-lewis or complaining of the movie's ham-fisted "message" ~ or else scratching their head in wonder at what it all means. toward the end of the film during the (somewhat) bizarre climax, the audience at the theater collectively gasped aloud. that doesn't happen often. the set up was so perfect. and yes, it's a movie about greed. but it's about something even deeper than that, i think. something even more primordial. but you can come to your own conclusions. i am extremely satisfied with mine.
and i guess that's what's so amazing about it. there's something here for everyone to talk about ~ and i can see it generating a lot of enthusiastic dialogue.
daniel day-lewis is brilliant, of course, and his daniel plainview a tantalizing mystery of a monster. if you thought bill the butcher was an astonishing curiosity, this character may short-circuit your mind a little. i didn't think bill could be topped, but there's some scenes in this film that are just mind-blowing. if nothing but a character-study, on those merits alone, i think it's a pretty darn brilliant piece of work. worth every minute of its 2 hour and 38 minute run-time.
i'm very glad i went.
