the devil is powerless,
and it liberates us
from a lot of sorrow, affliction and sadness.
~ Saint John of the Cross ~

Dali's famous "Persistence of Memory"
I came across this very compelling quote from Saint John of the Cross and thought it might make an interesting discussion point with regards to how a focus on the past can keep us from moving forward and be an enslavement of sorts.
Obviously not all memory is "of the devil" ~ though even "good" memories can lead to a sort of fatal nostalgia which breeds pessimism and discontent. Especially because memory is so much a part of forgiveness (letting go of past hurt and forgetting the slights of others), how we handle our memories seems an enormous part of how we are able to pursue Christian perfection.
How do you feel memory has affected your life view and philosophy? How has it affected your Christian walk?
On the flip side, what are some of the virtues of memory?
I know, big questions ~ !
