i edited something i found obnoxious on wikipedia the other day.
i feel like a dweeb. first, for reading wikipedia and second, for caring enough to make a correction.
my real impulse was to overhaul the whole entry, but i restrained myself to merely making the correction (or three). at least that. there was also a statement on there that someone had challenged and a citation request was posted. i was going to rewrite the sentence to remove the need for the challenge, but i didn't touch it because i didn't want to get involved in any arguments. maybe i should have.
when you see how many errors (glaring errors) a single entry can have, you know just how unreliable the wiki is as a resource for many things that haven't been vetted.
i basically only trust it for general dates and pictures.
this has been a public service announcement.

in writing: i'm writing. it's a little like old bones scraping in the joints at the moment.
currently i'm trying to figure out where/how to insert the scene in which Poppet takes Rathbone for a drive. it continues to fascinate me that people were so interconnected and i can't begin to imagine what the two talked about:
in a similar vein, i mentioned before about Mr. Hanty's incident with H. K. Douglas at the trial. turns out the two had collided once before when Hanty captured Douglas and gave him permission to bury their dead. their first meeting was not friendly, but in the course of things, captive and captor got to chatting and ever after they were lifelong pals. which explains why Douglas was hanging out in the hall with Hanty when Anna came out and fainted and why Douglas speaks so endearingly of Hanty in his book.
anyway, Poppet and Rathbone did not remain "intimate" lifelong friends. in fact it was some years after the fact that Poppet learned of Rathbone's psychotic homicidal breakdown. Poppet (maddening as ever) expresses some sympathy, but says nothing as to whether it affected him.

poor henry rathbone
went completely bonkers
having never recovered
from the strain of that night.
he just didn't make it.

Rathbone: gee, sparky, how's the trial going?if Poppet would have just explained some of these things more rather than dropping infuriating, tantalizing little statements all over the place, this wouldn't be so nerve-wracking. and what exactly does "intimately" mean to Poppet when he describes his friendships as such ~ and i'm not suggesting anything lewd, i'm merely curious: did they hang out at the met club? were they drinking buddies (did Poppet drink?) or just friendly acquaintances?
Poppet: fine, old shoe, mending well?

Luckily the ones that have really bugged me in the past have eventually become the pet projects of other people who so far have known what they're doing...

yes, i spose the only reason i jumped in was because i thought the entry obscure enough that no one might fix it for a long while and i just couldn't stand the misinformation sitting there stinking up the joint.
i certainly wouldn't want it to be my pet project!
