the other night i watched Russian Ark. it's a russian film. in case the title didn't give it away. i'd been wanting to see it forever and didn't go to the theatre to check it out when i should have. i have a huge tv, but on the big screen, i can imagine it's phenomenal.

if you love art films, Russian history, costume films, museums, etc. check this film out. it's every bit as astonishing as the critics say. there's not much of a plot, but it's a lovely meditation on memory and history and art, filmed at the Hermitage in St. Petersberg with a cast of literally thousands, including three live orchestras. and all the actors are in period costumes spanning 300 years (and if you don't know anything about costuming, russian dress is some of the most beautiful ever ~ at least i think).

and did i mention (in case you didn't know) that all 136 minutes of it is one continuous shot? no cuts. no editing. no kidding.

check out this film.

the poster is a little insane
and sort of gives away the metaphor
(about which i was clueless until the end),
but it's still kinda cool
(and maybe i'm just dumb).

I saw The Russian Ark a few years back and loved it....hmm....maybe it's time to watch it again!

And, isn't it a great thing when the film meets up with what the critics say? I don't think that happens very often anymore...

Hope you have a great day! :)

Hey, have you seen Baraka? It's a bit older, but if you haven't, it's in a similar vein and just as wonderful....

If you ever get a chance to see Russian Ark in a theater, you should go for it, it really is amazing. I got to see it in a (small) theater when UCSB offered it as part of their Arts & Lectures program.
