I've been writing a wee bit on "The View from the Back Porch" this morning and have decided that i'm undecided about how to spell Morse's brother's name.

in other news, i think i will submit "The Hot Spot" to Zoetrope's 10th Annual Short Story Contest (thanks tiellan for the heads up!). it'll cost me $15, but i'm confident that it could compete (and with the prize being possible representation by william morris??? get outta town!)

it's just a matter of tightening it up. as is, the story runs about 2k over the guidelines. that's fine though since it can be trimmed a lot to make it a stand-alone. Just really have to sit down with it and make it work. my main concern is whether i should end it with the confession or just the intimation. it'll be fun to play with it a little.

FYI....I chose "Mish" because I had a student that went by that name (short for Michel, so he pronounces it Meesh), but the poor guy was subjected to all sorts of horrible mispronunciations..

And, yay for the Zoetrop contest! Go you! Repped by William Morris would be an awesome prize!

good pernt about "Michel" ~ it wouldn't be that important if i didn't hate the name Mitch so much. i keep thinking to be safe i oughta just call him Mishie, but then i wonder if that looks strange as a diminutive. then again, maybe no stranger than Michie.

Aw, what if one is odd like me, and would pronounce the name as "Mik" since I think of "ch" as more of a "k" sound than anything else?

i know, it's silly to worry about such a thing, but the character's name is pronounced "Mish" and it would just weird me out for people to call him "Mick" or "Mitch". So maybe even though it's properly spelled "Mich" (as in literally short for Michigan), i should go ahead and nickname him "Mish" with an "s".

Despite living in Michigan for my entire life, and basically being in love with this state, I would still probably pronounce it "Mitch". . .most of the time. Sometimes it's kind of an in-between, though, where the tongue goes up to make the "t" stop, but doesn't quite get there before the "ch" comes out. Does that make sense? I hope so.

i think i'm safer hedging off the possibility of a hard "ch" by just not using it.
