~ The Seventh Day ~
It would seem the last thing on anyone's mind for the Lord's day is the Lord! Amy spies an intriguing stranger at church, Emmaline spies an intriguing stranger in town, and Lewis mostly wants everyone to just go to the devil.
Excerpt:
The group of women and Reverend Donald were just about to go inside when a clanging bell attracted Emmaline's attention and she turned out from the porch to see a strange pair approaching. A robust elderly priest in a violet stole with a sack over one shoulder was marching down the main street holding before him a crate. He had a sunbrowned face and wore his silvering hair long in a braid that trailed down his back. A young native boy with long, bowl-cut hair preceded him in a white surplice, carrying a processional crucifix.
"Just as I said. The town is full of Romans," Biddy Two warned Emmaline secretly.
"Father Marithé," Reverend Donald said by way of explanation. "He's been knocking around these parts since before the annexation. Has a very respectable reputation. He comes once a month from Leverettsville. He's quite harmless, despite his appearance."
"What is he carrying?" Emmaline asked.
"Pie," said Biddy Two tsked shamefully.
"What kind of pie?" Emmaline asked as if it were the most natural follow-up question.
