i find it hilarious that in so many anecdotes people say something to the effect of what a stern disciplinarian he was and how he had a quick temper, then two sentences later they're talking about how he let them get away with this or that, or how they preferred his command to some of the other yo-yos who were mean.
re: the sleeves ~ that's the way they're cut. it was the style. not sure this is the same coat, but it's also his (http://lookingland.livejournal.com/226903.html). Aside from the general color (sometimes not even then) and the epaulets, "uniform" was sort of relative. Especially since it was usually your wife who made your clothes ~ and she was apt to do whatever she wanted with them.
