tomorrow is pay day and i have a long-standing tradition of blowing my first paycheck. unfortunately i have so many bills that this is not going to be feasible this time around.

however ~ my contract paycheck will be coming by next week and though i can't afford to blow most of that either, i have judiciously decided that i can at least uphold a promise i made over a year ago, and set forth to adopt Hollis into my fold.

he'll cost me all my mad money and i will feel guilty for doing it, but i can't not have him (this is my compulsion, see?)

i met Hollis in august of 2005. some of you may even remember him from Andersonville. i was looking for a young kid to throw into a guard tower and in a random google search found Hollis (and what a coincidence: he's dressed in a georgia military institute uniform). i don't believe in coincidences. this was my Hollis from the moment i laid eyes on him. the same way i found Lewis back in 1999 on eBay (and what a bidding nightmare that was!).

where Hollis fits into the grand scheme of things is uncertain. he enlisted at 13, claiming to be 14, and he ran away from either an abusive home or an orphanage (he’s not saying). he’s sturdy and tall and has a maturity for his age, which has helped him fit in with the older soldiers, but he was never sent to the field in the two years he served in the army. he was always assigned to the stretcher-bearers and other “safe” jobs because of his youth. when he gets assigned to Camp Sumter, it's the first time he has a gun and some authority, though no clue what to do with it.

Hollis is a bit of a hard luck case ~ he tries to get along with everyone and will sometimes debase himself to do so. he’s eager to please others and wants to be liked. While he puts on a good show of confidence, he’s really very uncertain of himself. he’s a good soldier, obedient, and yet has no real clue what the war is about.

among his talents and skills are whittling (he’s overly fond of knives). he can’t read or write, but he’s fairly sharp and has a moderate sense of ethics.

and he's the guard who shoots Isaac in the head ~ i know that much.

i don't have any plans for Hollis beyond Andersonville. not sure where he could fit in otherwise. he ought to do great things, i think. maybe go to California. maybe strike it rich.

~ but i still want him. i let Isaac go (twice) six years ago on eBay and have always regretted it. Hollis is gonna cost me dear, but i've paid more for even sillier things, i 'spose.

anyway, i sent the site who's got him an email saying i wanted him. let's see if he's still available.
