it's not even nine o'clock and i am already losing control of my day ~

the definition of crazy is doing something over and over again expecting a different result.

the art of practice is doing something over and over again until you get it right.

is it just me or does anyone else see that the difference between these two things is merely a presupposition of success?

i promised myself that among my new year's resolutions i would stop making big pronouncements about the direction of my writing and art and try to work harder at resolving the problems i have with committing to a shape and a scope for what i want to do with the world i have created and in which i invested half of my life.

so instead of kicking myself today for feeling wholly inadequate to the task, i'll just share this morning's sketch.

the weirdest thing about drawing this was trying to flip the part in his hair to the right instead of the left. i was experimenting here with the glass/reflection aspect. the truth is, doing "effects" is easy with PhotoShop or Corel Painter. my problem continues to be the artwork itself.

i dunno what i am going to do with this. it's the composition for the first illustration for Stars in Their Courses, which, having finished at 22 pages (zooks!), i am now trying to cut. a good illustrator can draw things that the text then doesn't need to cover. i'm hoping to extirpate a lot of the narrative exposition by the time this is done, but it's going way slow. especially considering this was supposed to just be a little "throw-away" incident in the grand scheme of things.

i dunno.

i'm just going to plod at it and see what happens. at least, for a change, i have a "text" to work with that i feel is generally finished, even if it is mildly pointless.

edit: i am posting the sorta maybe final of this image (under a cut). not sure how i feel about how it came out.
i frutzed with the color a whole bunch, but me and color...well...yeah.

Re: definition of crazy vs. art of practice: I think about this all the time, and am often not sure which one I am engaged in. Ahh, writing.

i think "practice" is the word we use to console ourselves when we know we're really just loons.

hahahahahaha ~

Well, fr all you say you have trouble with the artwork, the results are pretty spiffy.

I like your style. I mean, your brother is an amazing artist, true, but your styles are so very different, and I quite like the...roundness (trying to describe this is hard) of your work.

Anyway, keep posting, I love the artwork posts, and i look forward to them.

thank you ~ !

i know what you mean about "round", i think. i guess i am going for something even "rounder" perhaps.

i guess at some point you just have to stick with you can do and make it somehow work to the end.

I'm always so shocked when you say things like "eck, me and color" because you do it so well. It's sepia! But it's not! It's enthusiastic! But there are maybe four tones! HOW DOES SHE DO IT? SHE'S SUPER-COLOR-GIRL

Re: crazy vs practice -- this ... suddenly makes the NaNo arguments make so much more sense.

ha ~ ! it's filters, man! i would be a dead duck in the water if it wasn't for PhotoShop's filters. it's the only way i can get an even tone because when i pick the colors i think i want, they always end up looking stoopit.

whatever works, right?

: o p

i do like that it's sepia-ish.

boo boo sed:

"the definition of crazy is doing something over and over again expecting a different result."

I think the definition is "doing the SAME thing over and over again and expecting a different result."

I liked all your versions, no matter what tools you use or how you got there I thought the color was just great.

I think I like the version under the cut a bit more because I think he looks more edgy and less boyish in that one.

moooo who is pre-storm and FREEZING to death (all though my definition of freezing and peeps in Minnesota's definition of freezing varies widely)

I was watching the weather reports this weekend and happened to notice that there was a town in Minnesota actually named "Embarrass". All right, who the hell names their town Embarrass? I want to visit this town. I want to visit the place where Embarrassment is made!

Nice picture BTW...
