i got more done this morning before i left for work than i managed to accomplish all weekend.

yes, the longed-for weekend was a complete disaster. that's about all that needs saying (no point going into the details).

accomplished: did my homework.

everything else: well nigh zippo.

i started writing opening no. 5 (thereabouts). it sucked:
The last time Poppet stood on the street to watch for the president, it was nine o’clock on a rainy morning and he was on the corner of 15th and Pennsylvania with a dense crowd, some of whom had been standing all night and were soaked to the skin from the drizzle.
staggeringly dull. i not only can't seem to decide on the best entry-point, but i've been reading a friend's writing and doing that comparison thing that's not so helpful.

: o p

so then i just started writing from my outline (that's what it's there for, after all, right?) and that dinna suck too much:
The prisoner hit his head on the low ceiling coming down the gangway. The blunt impact blinded him and he stood still a moment to focus. Then the guard pulled him by the bar that connected his wrists and his vision smeared into streaks of bluish-gray walls and the shuffling bodies of his escort, yellowed by soft lamplight.
it still feels sorta precious and sorta flat. it may be that i am too close to the material (i.e. sick of looking at it ~ hahahahaha). will have to just press through. i feel like i worked like a dog on the first barge scene and only managed 600 words out of it. sheesh. i mean, that's the right number of words for the scene, i think ~ but it was a lot of work to get there.

anyway, i have much to do still, so i better go do it.

happy monday all!

p.s. i used the Monitor (you can tour it at that link) as a model to try to figure out the configuration of the barge. the Saugus and the Monitor were roughly similar in terms of what the space looked like (generally). so this was a nice little 3-d exhibit that gave me a sense of the interior of the chain locker. i have to double check on exactly where it was that people hit their heads, but i'm guessing it was in the berth.
