for the [livejournal.com profile] 50bookchallenge:
no. 3 ~ Mr. Bristol's Barn by John Szarkowski, diary by Philo Blinn. here's a whole bunch of things i love thrown together: black and white photography, an old barn, a 19th century diary, and a lovely arty format binding it all together. substance here is in the eye of the beholder, though the diary does tell an interesting story. almost wish more of it had been included, though i can read that sort of drivel all day and perhaps, given the format, this was enough. the book ended too soon for my tastes and surely might have concluded on a stronger note, but the endnotes were gratifying and, well, let's face it, what's more to say?

szarkowski's photos are very ansel adamsy, but i can look at snow on trees all day long.

i liked this well enough visually (in a sort of pastoral, meditative way) that it's given me some ideas (or perhaps solidified ideas i was already brewing).

this is going somewhere, i think.
