no spoilers here.

went to see The Illusionist yesterday. now here's a movie based on a steven milhauser short story, set at the turn of the century, directed with a vaguely truffaut sensibility, and sporting a philip glass soundtrack.

what's not to love? this was was dog-eared for me from inception!

i think the only reason this film suffers a little is due to its somewhat simple storyline. it's not epic in scale and doesn't try to be, but given the lush setting and costumes and the fact that the plot revolves around a crown prince of europe, you might go in expecting a grander scope. but it's based on a short story and is really a very simple love story, so the world in which the action takes place is actually very narrow.

lovely scenes throughout. even though i was one step ahead of the story (though i admit one or two things had me guessing a little), i still enjoyed it thoroughly and recommend it with enthusiasm.
