about vocations . . . .

The Christian writer
does not decide
what would be good for the world
and proceed to deliver it.

Like a very doubtful Jacob,
he confronts what stands in his path
and wonders if he will come out
of the struggle at all.

Thomas Merton ~ His Life and Works

Merton seems even more relevent today as a herald of the needs of our society ~ his message continues to be profound.

I am against war, against violence, against violent revolution,
for peaceful settlement of differences,
for nonviolent but nevertheless radical changes.
Change is needed,
and violence will not really change anything:
at most it will only transfer power
from one set of bull-headed authorities to another.

~ Thomas Merton ~
