i'm sure it's what drove him back home (where it was quiet and people would be less likely to condemn him). it's really hard to get a sense of how he felt about reprecussions because he never talks about himself ~ he's such a closed book.

his harvard address is sorta interesting because in it he talks about books as a refuge, consolation, etc. and that lawyers in particular need to temper their study of law with the pursuit of literature (to remain human).

i think he was smart enough to cope well with his trials. staying out of the limelight certainly kept him from being attacked the way many other people involved in the case were (Mr. Hanty suffered a long uphill struggle in his political career and died young (when otherwise he might have been president!) ~ for example ~ and the case certainly ruined the careers of a number of other people affliated with it).

so i feel for Poppet, certainly, but i think he was resourceful and came from strong roots (and he must not have been doing half-bad to maintain his law practice, do all the community service he did, and score a second wife to father all those chitlins!).
