for the [livejournal.com profile] 50bookchallenge:
no. 29 ~ When the Bells Tolled for Lincoln by carolyn harrell. first of two books i picked up on the nation's reaction to the assassination, this one's sort of focused on the immediate response in the South under military rule in the weeks following Lee's surrender. the author basically says people were happy but inclined to keep it to themselves for fear of reprisals (beatings, shootings, hangings were reported) and that they went through the motions of "proscribed" mourning dictated by the union. except in texas where there was less military occupation, the press was still free, and people danced in the streets. under the rejoicing (flagrant or no) was the fear of what andy "the ass" johnson was going to do for the hopes of the South. make a mess of things, of course. there's some wonderful tidbits throughout the book, though much of it is repetitious or uninterestingly presented. it's an excellent reference even if it isn't screamingly well-written.

another braided hair mourning bracelet,
this one with lincoln (the ring also uses the
same portrait). dunno whose hair this one is
either, but it's pretty inneresting ~

i have so much to do today, but the morning is slipping away from me in telephone conversations and idle reading. time to get off my duff and clean the house.

later i'm hoping for ice cream and maybe getting some writing started!

about writing: i've been thinking about my opening and am developing a wicked desire to make it Captain Holly's family in that opening scene (just as a sort of in-joke). his son is too young (would only be two years old), but maybe it's his wife and her sister talking and the boy is his nephew. just for kicks.

happy sattidy all.

i expect to post more today (there'll be lots of procrastination ahead, i think) ~

ICE CREAM!!!

Let me (who is on an ice cream fast) live vicariously through you. Tell me all about it. Every detail.

I've also given up cleaning because it's fruitless (stop by my blog later to see why).

I love hearing about your writing --I don't know what or who you're talking about but that doesn't stop me.

Re: ICE CREAM!!!

mmmm ~ i had some sort of nutty buddy thing with a caramel center and a delicious cone. the outer chocolate was light and crisp, the nuts crumbled from the ice cream crown nicely, and the ice cream melted just fast enough to be soft without threatening to sog up the cone.

i'm debating having another but think making that elusive spaghetti might be the more sane choice.
