given some of the atrocious writing that's currently being published despite editors, etc. i'm not so sure that self-publishing will water the literary pool any more than it's already been watered. for sure there will be a lot more garbage to sift through and pass over, but what's reuly bad will likely sink to the bottom and presumably the good stuff will rise to the top. the really factor is the marketing: a so-so book can sell well even if it's not particularly well-written so long as it's well-sold, whereas a brilliant novel might disappear into the dust for lack of marketing support.

i think it's why, as writers, we're asked more and more to play the margeting agent as well (a role i am personally no good at whatsoever). does this mean my chances of making it in the publishing world (conventional or self) are nil? dunno. i can learn some basic marketing tricks, i suppose, but i'll never have the stomach for it.

the ones who succeed are going to be the ones who can write competently and also aren't afraid of selling their wares.

it's definitely a challenge to start thinking about.
