kaspar x 3

[livejournal.com profile] bachsoprano suggested doing a side-by-side comparison to see what the difference the size makes. below i've posted the original 2.5 x 3.5, a 4.5 X 5.5 in watercolor, and a 4.5 x 5.5 (the same one, in fact) in digital tinting. all are scanned and reproduced approximately their actual size.

i'm not going to editorialize much on this ~ yet.

I like the 1st one. Just my twopenny...

i do too. the other two just so look sanitized to me now that i can see them all together.

i x-posted this to [livejournal.com profile] illustrators and the people who have responded have picked no. 3 ~ of the three, it's the one i like the least ~ hahahahahaha ~

I like the first one too, but I got a better sense of his eyes being closed in the second one...

But, it's really interesting seeing the difference in texture...I like the smoothness of the watercolor, but I also like the grit in the first one - it gives Kaspar more depth, I think...

Very cool! Thanks for posting :)

someone in the other community made a good point about the shading being too light in the watercolor (for the contrast of the ink) ~ i can see that's part of the big difference and that's why the larger size is problematic--i start getting tentative with the paint. the small the image i'm working with, the more texture and depth of color (okay, it's b & w, but for lack of a better word), i am comfortable with. give me wide open spaces and everything gets watered down and weak-looking.

the eyes open/closed problem is a drawing problem (rather than a painting or a size problem, i think). the smaller the picture, the less concise my lines are ~ and again, i did it with a nib, which i'm not very proficient with.

hmmm ~ i think i'll try a set of panels and see what happens.

thanks for your input!

I'll be the lone voice opting for the second, so feel free to ignore me. :)

hahahaha ~ i still like the second one a lot (else i wouldn'a done it!). just still break out into a rash after digital tinting all day. i'm still gonna do my online serial in digital tint, but i want a different look n' feel for this other project.
