so despite trying to let my mind cut loose for the evening to free-associate on the relationship between talking fruit, the walking dead, and flaming, many-eyed, multi-winged chariot wheels, nothing brilliant emerged (save a small "Gethsemene" scene which will serve to clarify what a Throne is not, but that's not really helpful).

i mean, the trick is: whatever the puzzle, it has to be subtle enough that its resolution can come to pass without anyone even realizing it (or at least merely as mildly explainable phenomena, like northern lights or something). i've never wanted a cataclysm for a solution because the whole idea is that grace is much less supernatural than we tend to think: it's in our everyday lives, not in grandiose signs and miracles.

this is a very literary conceit, but one which Bernanos pulls off, one which Cather pulls off, and in some ways best captured in a short fantasy story by Doris Vallejo (which has remained with me for a long, long time). in the story a princess falls in love with a beastly dragon and they have a very torrid love affair (all the while the dragon claiming he's an enchanted prince). in the end, of course, he doesn't change from being a dragon and it's clear that he's lied, but the princess doesn't care.

it's very simple. unlike the byzantine labyrinth of my own plot.

anyway, i came up with a long list of questions for myself that i'm going to try to work on to see if i can get some overview as to what is what. i guess that's my project for the day.
