50bookchallenge:
no. 9 of 50 is the pragmatically titled French Stories (a bantam dual-language book i picked up at Half Price for 50ยข). i meant to read doctorow (which is still sitting at my bedside), but just needed something different, i guess.
this was a fun book ~ stories by all the greats: maupassant, voltaire (weird piece of science fiction), claudel, balzac, camus, etc. gide's story of "The Return of the Prodigal Son" was one of the most compelling (brought a lot of criticism and i can see why, but it's certainly a interesting re-examination of the motives of the prodigal son). flaubert had a story called "The Legend of Saint Julian the Hospitaler" that was pretty cool, and claudel's monologue by Judas before the hanging in "The Death of Judas" was really wonderful. i would really like to see more of claudel's work ~ what handful of writings of his that i know of, i really like.
interestingly most of these stories had faith at their core (including balzac's "The Atheist's Mass"). glad i picked this up. it's always amazing to find some treasure among the trash.

i've posted my self-challenge. it's not much, but then my time is pretty limited in the next few weeks. i'll be happy if i at least produce something before march 1st. (speaking of march 1st, it's ash wednesday. i need to hie me to confession. i've been so lax. meh).

and ~ finally, a word of thank you to all who posted in response to my snit. all is well in the world and none here has given offense. i love you all muchly. and stuff. (consider this your valentine).
