in sallie hartranft's defense, these muttony sleeves were not unfashionable. in fact, her husband's uniform is one of the nicer styles of the era ~ and nicer tailored! by comparison, look at thomas ewing (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/f/f2/Gen-TEwingJr.jpg/200px-Gen-TEwingJr.jpg), who always looked like a complete rumpled mess. i guess his wife wasn't as particular.
