yesterday i drew a hat.
over and over and over.
i can draw exactly two kinds of hats: top hats and military forage caps. anything else is just a mystery to me ~ even when i try to copy a model i can never quite get the brims or crowns right. which makes it no amount of trouble that i decided to give James a john bull hat. it's sort of like a top hat, but not and the difference, though subtle, is significant. so yesterday i drew hats until i finally figured out how to make it work. it probably sounds doofy, wasting a whole day on a hat, let alone getting excited about finally figuring out how to replicate it, but frankly, for someone who is as dimensionally challenged as i am, it's a pretty significant coup.

the hat
possibly more important (or more predictably, or more disturbing, even) is the fact that my attempt to illustrate Stars in Their Courses has gone from illustrations to sequentials once again. once the pictures get drawn, so much of the narrative seems superfluous. i like the narrative. it's still not much of a story, but the writing is fun (as much as a story like this can be called fun).
anyway, i have no idea what to do with it. keep plodding, i suppose. i want to keep writing, though. i'm dreadfully behind on other projects and there are deadlines looming.
it's nice to have the day off. i have a cold and it's kind of snowy, so it's nice to stay in and drink tea and fritter away the time on doodling and such.
hope the rest of you who have the day off are enjoying it ~ for that matter, hope you are enjoying the day regardless of whether you have it off.
