it seems like a heavy burden to have to carry so many years in an era when day-to-day living was already difficult without the added strain.
i'm reading The Civil War Veteran (http://www.amazon.com/Civil-War-Veteran-Historical-Reader/dp/0814752047/sr=8-1/qid=1172337455/ref=sr_1_1/002-0063098-9892843?ie=UTF8&s=books), and it's very very interesting how post-war veterans shaped America and how their perspectives on life in the aftermath of incredible hardship in many ways soured race relations, politics, and a whole lot more. it's also the book from which i tracked down corbett's memoir, so the bibliographies alone are well worth the gander.
it's sad how disability acts and pensions were so bogged down in red tape that many men suffered without for so long. i keep remembering that poor young armless fellow in that other book who died begging on the street ~ just for want of assistance. shame shame shame.
